LO TORC® Plug Valve The high value, dependable pe rformance, and low maintenance requirements of Halliburton Lo Torc® valves can help reduce overall operating costs and help cu t downtime. These features have made Lo Torc valves the choice of high pressure plug value users, worldwide: Provides Outstanding Value Even though it leads the indust ry in quality and pe rformance, the Lo Torc valve, size for size and service for service, is priced with or below every other high pressure plug valve on the market— even valves wi thout stainless steel plugs. Helps Reduce Valve Replacement Costs The rugged construction of the Lo Torc valv e provides long, dependable service under severe conditions. The stainless steel cylindric al plug is heat treated to help eliminate galling during operation and provides maximum resistance to corrosion. Meets A Broad Range of Operating Requirements Lo Torc valves perform dependably at high wo rking pressures. The sealing principle of the valve compensates for body deflections. Each valve is hydrostatically tested to the pressure specified by API 6A. Offers Installation Versatility Lo Torc valves are lightweight. This fe ature makes the valve suitable for many applications, including mobile installations. Helps Reduce Maintenance Costs The Lo Torc design provides for in-line maintenance. Re pair or maintenance can be accomplished in minutes with the valve body left in the line. Total disassembly of the entire valve involves removing only two caps crews, adjusting nut, and handle adapter or wrench. Every part in the Lo Torc valve may be replaced with standard parts. None of the parts requires factory return of the valve for servicing. Even in high pressure services, the Lo Torc plug valve is easy to operate. Unique design characteristics make this possible: 1. The cylindrical plug eliminates jamming or wedg ing induced by pressure acting against differential areas ( a problem inherent with a tapered plug) . 2. The plug is further pressured balanced by identica l stem seals at each end. This feature eliminates costly and inefficient thrust bearings. 3. A initial seal between the plug and valve inserts is obtained without lapping, selective assembly, or excessive force. The valve inserts are tapered on the OD to match the valve body cavity. The inner surfaces of the inserts are precision ground to exactly the same diameter as the plug. The inserts are parted into identical halves that, when aligned in the valve body by using the adjusting nut, transmit a firm, uniform clamping action to the sealing area. 4. The plug and inserts are free to " float" downstre am to compensate for temporary body deflection. As pressure is increased, the seal between plug and down stream insert half is made more effective. Since only a small area is under direct mechanical bearin g, the operating torque does not become excessive. ( In most other valve designs, the entire plug surface contacts the body and is subjected to frictional forces.) 5. Frictional forces are also reduced by the design of the stationary o-ring seal between inserts and body cavity. Differential pressure acts on the section of the insert sealed by the o-ring, transmitting a force against the plug. Since the seal area is smaller than the bearing area, this compressive force is considerably less than similar forces encountered in va lves that do not have this design. Reduction of this force is directly responsible for reducing operating torque without sacrificing seal efficiency. 1. Valve body. The Lo Torc valve body is alloy steel , heat treated for extra strength and durability for high pressure service. 2. Plug design and material. The balanced cylindrical design of the plug ( or core) eliminates longitudinal loading. To resist corrosion, the plug is made of stainless steel ( standard on every Lo Torc valve) . 3. Valve inserts. The valve inserts are tapered on the OD to provide easy adjustment for maximum sealing and plug alignment. The inserts are machin ed with a raised surface surrounding the o-ring groove. This raised surface ( boss) is the only portion of the insert which contacts the valve body and serves as the bearing area on the plug. This design reduces the torque required to operate the valve. Various types of inserts are available. Ductile iron or cast iron inserts ( depending on size) are recommended for general fluid service applications. Sealing is due to metal-tometal contact between the insert and the plug. For sour or corrosive service, aluminum bronze inserts are available. 4. End connections. The end connections are hammer union, threaded, or flanged. Flanged connections conform to the dimensional and material requirements of API 6A. Grayloc hubs, butt welds, and other custom end connections also are available. 5. Adjusting nut. The adjusting nut is alloy steel. An o-ring seal is provided around the adjusting nut. 6. O-ring seals. For standard service, 90-durometer nitrile o-rings seals are recessed into grooves in each insert and below the adjusting nut threads. For corrosive applications and temperature extremes, Teflon or fluoroelastomer o-rings are available. 7. Plug seals. The stem diameters at the top and bo ttom of the plug are sealed by specially designed packing rings made of 75 durometer nitrile perman ently bonded to brass reinforcing washers. For moderate temperatures with corrosive fluids or solvents, seals of fluoroelastomer with a stainless steel backing ring are available. For applications involv ing extreme temperatures or the handling of highly corrosive media, a Teflon seal ri ng, self-energized by an inconel spring, can be provided. Maximum service temperatures are 250° F for nitrile and fluoroelastomer and 300° F for Teflon. 8. Lubrication system. Lubricant is supplied throug h the conveniently-placed grease fitting, giant button- head type. The lubrication chambers above the belo w the plug are connected by recesses between the two valve inserts. 9. Valve operation. Full operation of the valve requ ires only a quarter turn ( 90° ) of the plug. A steel wrench or a cast steel handle adapter, equipped with equidistant operating bar sockets is available for all valves with bore sizes from 1 in. through 3-1/ 8 in. This socket design is intended to simplify operation of the valve, regardless of its installed position or location. An operating bar is also available for use with the handle adapter. Valves with 3-1/ 16-in. and larger bores are operated with a gear operator. Pneumatic or hydraulic actuators are available on special order for all valve sizes. 10. Sour service. Valve assemblies for sour service conform to NACE MR 01-75. Plugs of monel or 316L stainless, aluminum bronze inserts, and se als of Teflon or fluoroelastomer are used. 11. Certification. All Lo Torc plug valve assemblies are traceable. Material chemical certificates and pressure test certificates are available for any valve assembly. Valves identified as " certified" also have mechanical properties included with the material certif icates. Certificates should be requested at the time of ordering.
